Sina Weibo Importer for NodeXL

NodeXL is a free, open-source template for Microsoft® Excel® 2007, 2010 and 2013 that makes it easy to explore network graphs.  With NodeXL, you can enter a network edge list in a worksheet, click a button and see your graph, all in the familiar environment of the Excel window.  Visit the NodeXL Graph Gallery to see the wide variety of graphs that have been created by the NodeXL community.

Sina Weibo is a social media platform with around 130 million active users per month in China. It offers microblogging service and is similar to Twitter.

The Sina Weibo Importer for NodeXL project will enable the collection, storage, analysis, visualization and publication of a range of social media networks.

The project is in-progress and is not yet publicly available.

When it releases we will initially provide access to the user's own Sina Weibo ego network: the collection of connections among friends created by mention, repost and reply.

Additional networks exist in Sina Weibo and the importer project will expand over time to include these types of connections.  For example, the Sina Weibo search interface can return collections of messages that share a common word or term.  It is important to note that more advanced forms of data access require approved access from Sina Weibo.  That access requires significant documentation and may not be available to all users.

The project is a collaboration with Professor Jana Diesner and graduate student Liang Tao from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Marc Smith from the Social Media Research Foundation.
